Getting started

Do I need solar panels to have a home battery?

No — solar panels are not required. You can charge your battery directly from the grid when electricity is cheaper, typically overnight, and use that stored energy during the more expensive daytime period.

The key is a suitable electricity tariff and a battery sized for your home. This lets you benefit from cheaper-rate electricity even if your roof is unsuitable for solar, or you simply don’t want panels. If you already have solar, a compatible battery can also store surplus generation for later use.

I have an EV tariff — can I use that cheap rate for my home too?

Yes, if your tariff allows it. Where the cheaper rate applies to your home’s electricity supply, you can charge both your EV and your home battery during the same cheap-rate window. The battery then stores that lower-cost electricity to help power your home later in the day.

We’ll check the tariff’s eligibility rules and charging window, along with your electrical supply and the power needed to charge both at once. The aim is to make more of the cheap electricity available to you, without assuming every EV tariff works in exactly the same way.

How much could a battery save me?

Your usage, tariff and system size determine the potential saving. The principle is simple: charge when electricity is cheap, store it, then use it when electricity is more expensive. Our savings calculator uses your bill or daily electricity use to estimate the result for your selected system.

The model assumes a full overnight recharge, 90% usable battery capacity and all covered consumption at your chosen night rate. It keeps the standing charge in both bills. Charging losses, changing demand, maintenance and other costs are not included, so the result is an estimate rather than a guaranteed saving.

If you have solar, you may also be able to store surplus generation and use it later. Solar generation and export income are not included in this calculator. We’ll discuss your actual setup before confirming a recommendation.

Choosing your system

What size battery and inverter do I need?

We offer batteries from 10 kWh to 40 kWh, with compatible inverter options from 3.68 kW to 10 kW. Think of battery capacity as how much energy you can store, and inverter output as how much power the system can deliver at one time.

The DX all-in-one range combines 10, 15 or 20 kWh storage with a 5 kW inverter. The ASW range offers 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 kWh storage, with selected inverter sizes for each battery. The calculator only offers combinations in our price list.

We recommend enough usable capacity for your full entered daily use, then choose the lowest-priced listed combination. At our 90% usable-capacity assumption, a 10 kWh battery provides 9 kWh; a home using 10 kWh a day therefore needs the 15 kWh option. More than 36 kWh of daily demand needs a tailored system assessment.

The largest battery is not automatically the best choice. We’ll also consider appliances running together, overnight charging time, your electrical supply and future needs. Daily usage alone cannot confirm the right inverter, so the online suggestion is a starting point for your assessment.

I have a heat pump — can I still have a battery?

Yes. A battery can form part of a home energy setup that includes a heat pump. Because heat pumps can increase electricity demand, choosing enough storage and the right inverter is particularly important.

We’ll look at your heating demand, seasonal usage and the other appliances you use at the same time. Inverter options up to 10 kW give us choices for higher-demand homes, subject to compatibility and your electrical supply. We’ll assess the whole setup rather than assume an average summer day represents your winter needs.

Can you connect the battery to my existing solar?

In many cases, yes. Connection to an existing compatible solar system is £300. This can let you store surplus solar generation for later, instead of buying electricity from the grid when your panels are no longer generating.

We’ll check your existing panels, inverter and connections first. If changes or upgrades are needed, we’ll explain the options and agree the costs before work proceeds. Even if connecting to your existing solar is not practical, the battery can still work by charging from the grid on a suitable tariff.

Installation and everyday use

What is included in the price and standard installation?

Your battery system is supplied, delivered and professionally installed. Our website uses the September 2026 standard system prices, with the battery and inverter combination shown in your estimate.

Standard installation includes up to 15 metres of surface-run cable and up to 3 metres of trunking. An optional EV charger adds £300, and connecting to existing compatible solar PV adds £300.

We’ll assess your property and confirm the installation scope, VAT treatment and any additional work in your written quote. If the property needs work beyond the standard installation, we’ll explain and agree the additional cost before proceeding.

Will my battery work during a power cut?

It can, with the correct optional backup setup. We can install an EPS (Emergency Power Supply) to keep selected essential circuits powered during a grid outage. These might include lighting, refrigeration and other agreed essentials, depending on the system and available stored energy.

EPS is not whole-home backup and is not included in the standard installation. It requires a dedicated backup consumer unit and additional wiring, so it is quoted separately.

We’ll discuss what you want to keep running, confirm the circuits and loads the system can support, and explain the limits before you commit. How long backup lasts depends on the battery’s charge at the time and the electricity used by those circuits.

Can I see what my battery is doing?

Yes — through the system’s app. You can monitor your home’s electricity use, battery charging and discharging, stored energy and usage history. Solar generation is also shown where applicable to your connected setup.

This helps you see where your electricity is coming from and how the battery is working for your home. We’ll explain the monitoring available with your chosen system and help you understand the information it provides.

Pricing, estimates and peace of mind

Why does the calculator start at an overnight rate of 7p/kWh?

7p/kWh is a starting assumption, not a tariff offer. It gives you an example to explore, but you should enter the overnight rate actually available to you. The calculator also lets you change the current blended rate you pay before adding a battery.

Your chosen overnight rate stays saved in this browser until you change it or reset the calculator. Check any eligibility requirements, cheap-rate hours and tariff terms before relying on the estimate.

Which standing charge does the calculator use?

Every estimate includes the same 57.19p/day standing charge before and after adding a battery. This is Ofgem’s Great Britain Direct Debit average for July–September 2026, including VAT.

We hold this benchmark constant for the illustration, so it does not create a battery saving. Actual standing charges vary by tariff and location; Northern Ireland is outside Ofgem’s price cap. If you enter a monthly bill, we subtract this assumed standing charge before estimating your electricity use.

How do finance and mortgage options work in the calculator?

The calculator shows the same standard system price whichever payment basis you select. Choosing Finance or Mortgage does not calculate a repayment plan, confirm eligibility or represent an offer of funding.

The payback and year-by-year figures assume the system price is paid upfront. Interest, fees and repayments are excluded, so borrowing can change the overall financial outcome. We’ll explain any available payment options and their actual terms separately before you decide.
